Lady Gaga working on new album

Lady Gaga has started work on her new album – and her manager has suggested she give it away for free. The follow-up to Born This Way will be released “sooner rather than later”, Gaga said, to “keep things exciting”.

It has been less than six months since Gaga released her second studio album, which has sold more than 5m copies worldwide. But despite her continuing to release singles from Born This Way, work on her third LP has already begun. “I’m actually already working on my next album,” Gaga told US radio host Ryan Seacrest on Saturday. The singer is also planning her next music video and tour. “[They] keep me very excited and busy because I have lots of new ideas, and I know exactly how I want [everything] to look,” she said.

Just days before Gaga performed at the IHeartRadio festival in Las Vegas, her manager suggested she give away her albums for free. “If it was up to me, I’d give away the next album and put it on every handset that I can put it on, to get that scale,” Troy Carter said. “What we’re looking to do is not just about selling the CD or the digital file. It’s how many people can we get the music to. How many people can experience it?

Although Lady Gaga packs out arenas worldwide, her albums are surprisingly slow sellers. In the US, The Fame sold fewer copies in 2010 than recent albums by Lady Antebellum and Justin Bieber. Although The Fame was the UK’s third biggest-selling album in 2010, it sold almost half as many copies as the No 1 album by Take That.
